The importance of taking your toddler to the dentist

Your child’s permanent teeth are developing beneath the gums and beneath their baby teeth. A pediatric dentist will ensure everything is developing normally in your child’s mouth:

  • Ensure teeth are coming in the right order
  • Check oral tissues for diseases
  • Determine proper jaw development and bite
  • Check for tooth and bottle decay
  • Professional cleaning to remove plaque
  • Identify if there are frenum issues that may interfere with proper function like chewing, speaking and even brushing your teeth
  • Provide education and instruction on how to care for your baby’s teeth

This early appointment is one of the best things you can do for your child. Many problems, which might otherwise develop, can be prevented by this early visit.

Putting kids and parents at ease

Keeping your child’s mouth healthy is important. Here are some common questions we get asked by parents.

Toddler Teeth Cleaning

Your child’s first professional cleaning should be done during the toddler years, between 6 and 36 months. Regular examinations during this time will allow the dentist to find and remove plaque and tartar buildup before they get out of hand.

Using specialized instruments, we will clean away and plaque or tartar on the teeth, much like we do with adult patients.

Cavities and Baby Teeth – To Fill or Not to Fill

Baby teeth naturally fall out between 6 and 12 years old. This can trigger some hesitation to filling baby teeth cavities. There are four factors influencing if baby teeth need fillings:

  1. How close the tooth is to falling out
  2. Calculating the size of the cavity
  3. Assessing your child’s cavity-risk.
  4. The chance of cavities from baby teeth passing to and infecting adult teeth
